While Twitter’s plan to shut Vine still ripples out, GIF host Giphy is opening its arms to Vine clips. The company says it will build a tool that turns Vines into GIFs and stores them on Giphy.
Exact mechanics are not public yet. Users will need a Giphy account, and the tool should arrive soon.
GIF fits a six-second loop in some ways, but GIFs have no audio. Vines that rely on sound effects or speech will lose punch when converted. For people who mainly want to keep the pictures, Giphy is still a backup path. Twitter has also said Vine users will be able to download their old videos.
There is still a little time before the app goes dark. Expect more third-party exporters. I would not be surprised if YouTube and Vimeo also try to gather Vine libraries onto their platforms.
