Forrester's take on AI and robots displacing U.S. jobs, which roles move first, and which new jobs rise in their place.

Research firm Forrester projected that cognitive technologies (AI, robotics, autonomous systems) would displace about 7% of U.S. jobs by 2025. Customer service, logistics, and taxi work sit early on that list. A lot of people will need new roles. The report also flagged that the shift would start to feel real within about five years of publication.

Forrester’s Brian Hopkins put it bluntly: around 2021 the disruption would hit like an earthquake. AI and cognitive tools would push roughly 6% of U.S. jobs aside first, with customer service, consumer services, transport, and taxi work taking the hardest early blow.

Zoom out and the math is more nuanced. Forrester saw about 16% of roles touched by cognitive systems, while new tech-driven jobs would reabsorb around 9%, leaving a net gap near 7%.

The roles expected to grow in that world: robot fleet monitors, data scientists, automation specialists, and content creators. Expect a heavy migration toward those skills.

Slow-learning humans, fast-learning machines

AI and machine learning compound on themselves. Systems that learn faster keep widening the gap. By the early 2020s, many forecasts assumed AI would read human behavior and needs more sharply, which also means more capable robots in daily life.

Facebook, Google, and Apple were already training on user signals. Years of search queries made Google smarter. Posts taught Facebook about emotion. Tens of thousands of Messenger bots learned from the questions people asked. Siri was already hard to put down for many iPhone users. In that sense, we help train the systems that may later take pieces of our work, even as we get real value back in the moment.

New tools will displace some roles and open others for people who keep learning. Do not stop upgrading your skills.
