Instagram knows it is already a powerful shop window, and it is preparing a major shopping-focused update.
In a blog post titled Shopping is coming to Instagram, the company said people will be able to see more detail on products they like and go straight toward an add-to-cart page.

Here is how the feature works:
- An ecommerce brand shares product-focused content.
- People who tap “tap to view” in the lower right see the product name and price.
- Tapping the product opens more information plus up to five related products the brand added (optional).
- A “shop now” button sends them to the purchase page for the item they want.
Instagram’s main goal, as the post notes, is to move people toward a purchase without leaving the app until checkout. If you like the product, details, and price, you only step outside to pay.
For now the feature opens only in the United States and only for a limited group of users, with a wider rollout later.
Instagram is already a huge storefront; this move toward completing the buy makes it a contender to become one of the world’s largest malls, and it will reshape how fashion brands plan both content and mobile UX.
