Popular dating app Tinder, which arrived in 2012, now offers Smart Photos so the first picture others see is your strongest one. It works both ways: you also see other people’s most popular photo first.
Tinder built a machine-learning algorithm on large-scale data to pick that lead image. The system looks at photos you have liked with right swipes, then chooses a first photo for each potential match that is more likely to resemble what you tend to prefer. In other words, Smart Photos behaves differently for every viewer.
In testing, matches rose by about 12%. The more you use the app, the more signal the model gets, so rankings can keep improving. It is a small product tweak with a clear goal: put your best face forward without making you reorder the grid by hand every week.
