Salesforce is stepping back from a Twitter acquisition, continuing a string of failed suitors.

Salesforce will not buy Twitter either. After Walt Disney and other names stepped away, the cloud CRM giant has also dropped acquisition talks for the microblogging network.

Twitter has been shopping for a buyer while its share price and user growth disappoint. Potential acquirers keep citing the same headaches: a still-high valuation relative to growth, a culture of public harassment that is hard to police, and uncertainty about how to turn the product into a durable business.

Salesforce had been one of the more serious remaining names in the rumor mill. Walking away leaves Twitter with fewer white knights and more pressure to prove it can fix engagement and monetization on its own, especially with Jack Dorsey back in the CEO seat and fresh cost cuts underway.

For now, Twitter remains independent, and the market will watch whether the next earnings report and product roadmap can stabilize confidence without a sale.
