When access blocks and VPN crackdowns pile up, people look for other paths. Tor is one of the better known options: a network and browser stack built around privacy and harder-to-block routes. Here is what it is and how to reach it.
What is Tor?
Tor stands for The Onion Router. It masks connections through layered virtual tunnels so you can browse with privacy and safety as the default goals. U.S. Naval Research Lab work helped create it. Like early computers, it began with military needs and later opened to civilians.
Who uses Tor?
Unlike a direct connection, you reach a destination through other relays on the network. Journalists, NGOs, and groups such as Indymedia and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) have long used it for sensitive online work. Usage from the Middle East has also risen in periods of tighter control.
How Tor works
Client software and open-source components manage how your machine joins the network.
Traffic is spread across hops so simple and complex traffic analysis get harder. Think of each request taking a winding path across multiple relays, dropping old footprints as it moves. Random path selection on each request is a big part of the protection.
Is Tor safe?
Safety is the usual first question. Tor maintainers have said U.S. government support for the project does not automatically mean a backdoor, though no anonymity tool is perfect and user behavior still matters.
