WhatsApp finally has GIF support. Today’s iOS update unlocks GIF sharing and lets people make their own.
Like Facebook Messenger, iMessage, and other chat apps, WhatsApp partners with Giphy so popular GIFs are a tap away. In a chat, open photo/video sharing and hit the “Search GIF” icon in the lower left.
Unlike many rivals, WhatsApp does not stop at playback. Its billion users can turn videos of six seconds or less into GIFs: pick the clip from the share menu, trim if needed, and tap the GIF toggle.
Looping video support also helps Live Photos from iPhone 6s and later. Force-touch a Live Photo in WhatsApp, swipe up, and choose photo or GIF. Pick GIF and WhatsApp converts it before sending.
